Here we can talk about Janko play

Will Janko play at the Beijing Olympics?

Postby jazzamcc on Sat Jan 26, 2008 7:29 am

Do you think Janko will play in the Olympics in August??
He meets the qualification criteria, by playing Davis Cup over the past few years. His ranking should be high enough to automatically qualify him without asking for a Wild Card.
It could be the perfect opportunity for him. Look at the previous Olympics. It was the under dogs who came through in the mens.

I found this article on the Serbian Olympic Committee's website.

7. decembar 2007.
Jelena, Ana, Novak and Janko in Serbian Olympic team

Jelena Janković, Ana Ivanović, Novak Đoković and Janko Tipsarević gave a solemn promise and signed a declaration of participation in the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing as members of Serbian mission!

Nine months prior to the Games and seven months before they would, according to the IOC rules, formally qualify for the Beijing Olympics, the world’s best tennis players made this unusual and voluntary step at a humanitarian tournament held at “Belgrade Arena” in the presence of several tens of thousands of spectators, including Boris Tadić, Serbian president, Ivan Ćurković, the OCS president, Snežana Lakićević Stojačić, chef-de-mission, and Slobodan Živojinović, president of the Tennis Association of Serbia. Millions of television viewers enjoyed the spectacle which was broadcast live on the second channel of national television.

The declaration signed tonight by Serbian aces reads:

“I hereby DECLARE to be aware of the fact that the results I achieve in tennis at the international level are recognised by the Olympic Committee of Serbia and that the national sports organisation considers me an “Olympic candidate” in its Olympic projects. I am AWARE of the criteria of the International Tennis Federation dealing with the participation in the Summer Olympic Games in Beijing. Therefore I DECLARE that I will observe the rules and sports code and that I will try to achieve the qualification standard and secure a place in the Olympic team of the Republic of Serbia. I ACCEPT the obligations deriving from the IOC Charter” – all followed by the athlete’s signature.

Serbia’s distinguished tennis player and president of the Tennis Federation of Serbia Slobodan Živojinović and Serbian chef-de-mission in Beijing Snežana Lakićević-Stojačić expressed their satisfaction and pride with the acceptance of the obligations on the same document with the following words:

“Esteemed athletes,

I am looking forward to your participation in the Olympic team of Serbia at the Summer Olympic Games in Beijing from 8 to 24 August 2008. The Olympic Committee of Serbia decided to present itself at the Games with as many athletes as possible and with a wish that the Serbian Olympians would achieve their best results. While the qualification period is still ongoing, I would like to point out that the other goal, namely being the best Serbian athletes, has already been achieved, as you, Serbia’s Olympians have achieved personal bests and fulfilled very demanding conditions of international sports federations and the International Olympic Committee. Having achieved the Olympic standard you have secured a place in the Olympic team of Serbia for the most important sports event in the world. Being a member of the Olympic team of Serbia and a member of the Serbian national team is one of the highest sports recognitions and honours.

Aware of the magnitude of your success and significance of the Beijing Games, the Olympic Committee of Serbia, together with national sports federations and state institutions, is committed to your Olympic preparations and creation of optimal conditions for your performance and presenting athletes, sport and citizens of the Republic of Serbia at the Beijing Games.

Dear Olympians, welcome in the team of the Olympic Committee of Serbia for the Beijing Olympic Games.”

Nenad Zimonjić failed to arrive to Belgrade as he was achieving the basic norms for participation in the Beijing Games, but will join his colleagues by signing the declaration as soon as possible.

Today, the Olympic team of Serbia numbers 52 athletes who have achieved the norms for Beijing. In fact, that figure has been increased this evening by four top athletes, each capable of fulfilling the greatest sports dream – the Olympic podium.

Just read that there will be 48 direct acceptances for the mens event.
The direct acceptances occur on the 9th of June. So if he is ranked 48 or lower, he will automatically qualify. There is a maximum of 4 singles players per country.
So with Spain having 9 players ranked 48 or lower at the moment, they would have to choose only 4. The same with France with 8 players meeting criteria. It is through this criteria that Janko may be able to squeeze in. :)
Also, he won't have that many points to defend, as this will occur before Wimbledon, where he will be defending plenty of points.
The Serbian Olympic Committee can also request a Wild Card for Janko. It is up to the ITF to give out the Wild Cards. I would think with the current boom of tennis in Serbia, they would be mad not to grant (give) him one!!

I'm excited for Janko!! :)
If you've ever been to an Olympics, you'll understand how exciting they are.
I just hope Janko enjoys the Olympic experience in Beijing. Let's hope for a good draw for Janko, and that he doesn't draw a seed in the 1st Round.
